Soak everything in PB Blaster. Remove the anode. Don't break the little bolts. How will you install a new anode if you break the little bolts? Measure Prop Shaft run out before removing the retaining ring and bearing carrier. Also, measure the rolling resistance of the lower unit assembly. Watch the video Lower Unit Measurements. I write all these measurements down in my logbook for future reference.
Don't start drilling holes and cutting and so on. Get the proper wrench for removing this retaining ring. That's the main point of this video. If you forget to bend the tab washer out of the way, well it makes the job harder. Turn the wrench with firm pressure with one hand to take up the slop between the teeth of the wrench and the teeth on the retaining ring so that the wrench doesn't bounce around while using the impact wrench. A breaker bar could be used if there is no impact wrench available. If it is very tight (soak in more PB Blaster), set the unit on the ground and stand on it while using the breaker bar.
It is very satisfying to unwind this retaining ring. Especially after reading all about how hard it is and how you need special tools and you have to drill it out so on. The ring can be reused. Of course, if its all badly corroded, the story will be different.
After the retaining ring is removed, watch Remove Bearing Carrier and pull out the carrier. Then you can draw out the propeller shaft. If you were replacing the propeller shaft, look you're like half way done.
